Panasonic plans to discontinue fluorescent lamps by 2027

Panasonic Corporation responds to international treaties and plans to cease production of all fluorescent lamps by the end of 2027. According to Nikkei, although the Japanese government has set a goal to switch all lighting fixtures to LED by 2030, the current progress is only 60%.

Fluorescent lamps (also known as fluorescent lamps, tubes, or fluorescent tubes) use electricity to excite mercury vapor in argon or neon gas, forming plasma and emitting short wave ultraviolet light. After the ultraviolet light is absorbed by the phosphor, it emits visible light to achieve illumination. At an international conference held in Switzerland in November 2023, countries reached an agreement to ban the production, import, and export of mercury containing fluorescent lamps by the end of 2027.
