Major companies have made new progress in their Micro LED layout, and a new round of market competition is about to begin!

In recent years, the investment boom in Micro LED has continued unabated, and Samsung, TCL, BOE Huacan, Leyard, Unilumin Technology, Chenxian Optoelectronics, AUO and other companies have made new progress!

Samsung is about to release AR glasses. Last year, Samsung announced after LG that it would completely abandon the LED business and shift its focus to Micro LED and other fields. Recently, according to Korean media reports, Samsung is accelerating the development of its LED on Silicon (LEDoS, a display platform that places micro-LEDs on silicon wafers, especially suitable for devices such as augmented reality AR glasses). It is expected to achieve commercial production in 2027 and launch second-generation AR glasses to compete fiercely with companies such as Apple and meta.

In addition to Micro LED AR glasses, Samsung has also launched the wall series of Micro LED products, covering 76-140 inches, focusing on the ultra-high-end market. TCL Technology: Its subsidiary Xinying Display has completed the construction of the pilot line On May 6, TCL Technology stated on the investor relations platform that the company's subsidiary Xinying Display has completed the construction of the pilot line. TCL CSOT has monochrome display technology capabilities in the field of silicon-based Micro LED and is promoting mass production. At the same time, it is increasing the development of full-color technology and actively cooperating with customers on AR glasses applications. BOE Huacan: Micro factory delivered two new products, COW and MPD. On March 19, BOE Huacan Micro factory officially delivered two new products, COW and MPD. The new COW/COC product 1530 delivered this time has a wafer size of 6 inches and a chip size of 15±1.5μm x 30±1.5μm. It achieves a high yield of 99.99%, diversification, high light efficiency with improved brightness, and good epitaxial uniformity. It is mainly used in electronic wearable devices, large indoor displays, AR/VR, vehicle-mounted displays and other fields. MPD's new products 0303&0202 have comprehensively improved display performance and customer ease-of-use. They are currently the best implementation solution in the field of micro-pitch. They can achieve ultra-high black area ratio, optimal white flat viewing angle, and 2/3 increase in die-bonding efficiency. They are mainly used in For semi-indoor/indoor display scenarios.

BOE Huacan Micro LED project is the world’s first 6-inch large-scale mass production line. The project mainly produces Micro LED wafers and pixel devices, targeting ultra-large and ultra-small size high-definition display scenarios. It is mainly used in large-size commercial displays, AR/VR head-mounted display devices and wearable devices. After reaching full production, it will achieve an annual production capacity of 24,000 Micro LED wafer sets (6 inches) and 45,000kk Micro LED pixel devices.

Leyard: Launched AR glasses products based on monochromatic Micro LED light engines On May 6, Leyard (300296) stated on the interactive platform on May 6 that through cooperation with Saphlux, it launched AR glasses products based on monochromatic Micro LED light engines, and jointly developed and marketed them with Saphlux through equity participation. The product needs to undergo internal sales testing before being launched on the market, and the time and method of launch are to be determined. Unilumin: Plans to invest in the construction of a Micro and Mini LED display production base project in Nanchang. Unilumin's financial report announcement shows that it plans to invest in the construction of a Micro and Mini LED display and lighting production base project in Nanchang City, with a total investment of no more than 600 million yuan. It will mainly build COB packaging production lines, chip-level MiP packaging production lines and other LED display production lines and LED lighting production lines. The products will be widely used in Mini/Micro LED display and lighting fields. Chenxian Optoelectronics: Released the world's first mass-produced 135-inch P0.7 TFT-based Micro LED splicing screen. At the recently held infocomm 2025 exhibition, Chenxian Optoelectronics officially Released the world's first mass-produced 135-inch P0.7 TFT-based Micro-LED splicing screen. This product has redefined industry standards with its four major advantages: nearly "zero stitching", healthy eye protection, high system reliability and ultra-low power consumption.

In addition, Chenxian Optoelectronics also exhibited a number of cutting-edge new products, including the world's thinnest P0.7 Micro-LED ultra-thin screen, the world's first 88-inch P0.5 Micro LED high-end home display and the world's first P0.5 Micro-LED transparent screen and other innovative products. AUO's Micro LED transparent displays can be used in a variety of scenarios. At this year's Touch Taiwan, AUO showcased for the first time a 127-inch TV made of the world's largest single-module 42-inch Micro LED display developed with brand customers. It also launched the world's thinnest and first 17.3-inch double-sided transparent Micro LED display, which can project different information on both sides of the same screen, creating a unique "transparent" interactive experience. Application scenarios include aircraft first-class seat compartments, commercial advertising, home decoration, and sales floors. museums and other diverse venues.

AUO Chairman Peng Shuanglang said that Micro LED will grow year by year in the next year, and will maintain a trend of cost reduction of 50% every two years. It is expected that by 2029, Micro LED will be able to compete with some OLED products. In addition to the new progress announced by the above companies, there are many other layout companies that have also announced their new technological achievements, layout patents, investment status, etc., so I won’t list them all here! A new round of market competition is about to begin! With the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, unlimited splicing, and good display effects, Micro LED will replace most LCD, OLED, projector and other display technology markets and is regarded as the ultimate display technology. Once the Micro LED technology matures and the price reaches the level of consumer acceptance, it will lead LED to enter a new field, from the tens of billions to the hundreds of billions market! This is why many cross-border companies and traditional LED display manufacturers are rushing to deploy Micro LED technology! In the field of Micro LED, China has a huge advantage and is expected to lead the world. However, it has also been received by South Korea, Taiwan, China and other countries family or region of concern. In May 2024, the Korean government announced an investment of 484 billion won (equivalent to RMB) within eight years to build a Micro LED industry ecosystem, aiming to establish a "super gap" in this field similar to the previous OLED technology field. Recently, the Korean government invested nearly 200 million yuan to reward the research and development of Micro LED and other technologies. Taiwanese media believe that due to recent breakthroughs in cutting-edge Micro LED and RGB Mini LED technologies by my country's major LED manufacturers BOE Huacan and Hisense, they have posed a severe challenge to Taiwan's Micro LED technology. He also believes that the rapid follow-up of mainland LED manufacturers may accelerate the Micro LED industry to move towards Red Sea competition, and price wars may be inevitable in the future.
At present, Micro LED is limited by cost and market acceptance. Major companies mainly launch AR glasses, commercial displays, TVs, vehicles and other products. It is believed that as time goes by, the cost of Micro LED will continue to decrease, thus accelerating the commercialization of Micro LED. Today, China's Micro LED business has made some gains. For example, Leyard's financial report stated that its Micro LED revenue in 2024 will exceed 800 million yuan, and new orders will exceed 1.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 75%. Unilumin's financial report also shows that its Mini/Micro LED has grown significantly, with COB and MIP accounting for 13%-15% of the company's display business, and will increase to 25%-30% in 2025. Lehman’s financial report revealed that its international COB display business revenue will increase by 47.9% year-on-year in 2024. Summary: After the development in recent years, the Micro LED business landscape has gradually been drawn up, and how to divide the market share in the future is about to happen. At present, companies with layout have stepped up their efforts to seize the market. Whether several leading companies will be formed in the future will eventually be determined.
