According to online news, meta has started cooperation with ams OSRAM, and the two parties are jointly developing Micro LED technology. If the news is true, it will be a development worthy of attention and may have an impact on other players in the industry.
This news cannot be verified yet, but it can be confirmed that Reality Labs, a subsidiary of meta, has set up a Micro LED R&D team in Regensburg - this location is adjacent to ams OSRAM's main Micro LED R&D and production base. Currently, meta is recruiting Micro LED engineers for the R&D team. In addition, some core Micro LED engineers and business personnel have been transferred from ams OSRAM to meta. This change may further strengthen the connection between the two companies.
After Apple canceled its Micro LED watch products last year, ams OSRAM closed its Micro LED factory in Malaysia, retaining only the Regensburg base as the company's main Micro LED production line, while the base still serves as a research and development center.
At the same time, meta is very active in the Micro LED field. In 2020, meta and Plessey reached a cooperation agreement, agreeing that Plessey will use all of its Micro LED production business to support meta's product research and development.
There are reports that meta has decided to terminate the cooperation project based on the fact that the research and development progress of Plessey and the process has not met expectations. But in early 2025, news emerged that the two companies were continuing to cooperate. In addition, in August 2025, Plessey was acquired by Haylo VC.
If meta has indeed started cooperation with ams OSRAM, this development will be of great concern, especially for Plessey. Of course, meta may also cooperate with multiple Micro LED chip suppliers at the same time.
In September 2024, meta released the "Orion" augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display project based on Micro LED micro-display. It is speculated that meta was using JBD's micro display. The company’s latest artificial intelligence augmented reality (AI AR) headset “Ray Ban Display” is equipped with a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) display engine.
