Current lighting-level LEDs can be roughly divided into low-power, medium-power, high-power and COB specifications. Wu Yingjie, associate research manager at LEDinside, pointed out that due to the rising market demand for LED bulbs, lamp tubes and commercial lighting, the market demand for mid-power LEDs has increased significantly, especially packaging types such as 5630, 3030 and 2835 have become mainstream in the market. LEDinside predicts that the output value of mid-power LEDs will surpass high-power LEDs starting in 2013.
Medium power is represented by the Korean manufacturer’s 5630 LED, which has won a lot of lighting market share due to its excellent cost performance. However, with the rise of Chinese LED manufacturers, especially the 2835 LED specifications issued by Chinese manufacturers, most of the 1030mil chips, brackets and other packaging materials are made of domestically produced materials. The cost is quite low, and they are often used in alternative light source products such as bulbs and lamp tubes, seizing a lot of the 5630 LED market.
As for COB, it has the advantages of simple optical design and no ghosting. It is more suitable for some single-point light source lighting types. Therefore, in addition to single light source LEDs, LED manufacturers have also successively launched COB products to meet the needs of various lighting markets. At present, the major manufacturers are still Citizen, Sharp, and Bridgelux, while CREE and Lumileds will also step up their efforts to increase the proportion of COB business in 2014 and launch a large number of COB products to cover various market needs.
