MicroLED opens up dual growth curves for display and optical interconnection

According to TrendForce's "2026 Micro LED Display and Non-Display Application Market Analysis" research report, in 2026, the Micro LED industry will be affected by sluggish consumer market demand and the crowding out effect of AI capital expenditures, and corporate resources will shift to applications with clear commercialization potential.

In terms of display applications, in addition to lowering the entry threshold through modularization and supply chain integration as much as possible, it is also developing towards highly interactive and high-added value fields; in non-display applications, Micro LED has further stepped into the field of CPO optical interconnection, trying to occupy a place in the infrastructure of AI.

Overall, Micro LED is gradually getting rid of the single framework of traditional display technology and moving towards the development of cross-field technologies that connect smart wearables, smart cockpits, AR and AI computing infrastructure. Through gradual penetration, it continues to expand market momentum. It is estimated that the total output value of Micro LED display application modules and Micro LED CPO modules will reach US$5.308 billion in 2030.

AR head-mounted display

Benefiting from the rapid development of the AI glasses market, Micro LED has taken the lead in making substantial progress in monochrome information prompt AR glasses with its advantages of high brightness, miniaturization and low volume. The second-tier supply chain has also accelerated its entry into the market. At the same time, industry players continue to invest in the development of full-color Micro LED technology.

As brands such as Meta and Google plan high-end AR devices, it is expected that 2028 will become an important time to observe the growth of the Micro LED AR market. Micro LED also meets the brand's specification requirements to achieve a Pixel Pitch of less than 4μm and a resolution of greater than 5000PPI. It also needs an ultra-high brightness of one million nits, which is conducive to the presentation of information such as object recognition, real-time navigation and cross-language subtitles in outdoor environments, further enhancing its technical value in all-weather AI glasses.

Micro LED Optical Interconnect

The rapid growth of generative and inferential AI has greatly increased the demand for high-speed transmission within data centers. With its low energy consumption, high transmission density and low error rate, Micro LED has begun to become a potential technical solution for 800Gbps, 1.6Tbps short-distance optical interconnection. Various technology camps have also accelerated their layout, and the overall ecosystem is expected to gradually move towards commercial mass production as early as the second half of 2028.

If Micro LED can continue to improve costs and processes through existing semiconductor and display supply chains, it will have the opportunity to become an emerging light source technology in AI high-performance computing infrastructure in the future, and it will also open up a second growth curve for Micro LED outside of the display market.

Wearable display

Garmin Fenix 8 Pro has driven Micro LED to officially enter the high value-added wearable market, attracting companies such as BOE and SDC to invest in development. As the supply chain gradually improves and technologies such as high-voltage chips improve power consumption bottlenecks, Micro LED is expected to be combined with physiological sensing, outdoor navigation and other functions in the future to become an important hardware interface for AI Agent cross-device interaction. Wearable devices will also become single information display terminals and further become an important hardware interface for the AI real-time interactive ecosystem.

Large and automotive displays

Micro LED large displays are transforming from high-end TVs to transparent displays, reducing chip usage and costs by enlarging the dot pitch. With high penetration and high brightness characteristics, transparent Micro LED is expected to be combined with AI Spatial Computing in the future, further extending the display interface from the exhibition and commercial markets to smart retail, interactive glass and other applications, becoming an important carrier for integrating AI visual recognition and virtual and real information.

On the other hand, the automotive market continues to reduce development costs and introduction risks through panel size and pitch standardization, modular splicing and supply chain resource integration. With the popularization of new energy vehicles and the evolution of L3+ autonomous driving technology, transparent window displays, HUDs and new types of central control displays will become potential entry points for Micro LED, allowing it to further develop from in-car displays to human-vehicle interactive interfaces in AI smart cockpits.
